Frankincense has a rich history, once used by upper-class Egyptians to eliminate foul odors, which were believed to be associated with evil. Today, it is still commonly used as incense but requires an external heat source, like incense charcoal, to burn properly. Frankincense is an oleo-gum-resin that naturally seeps from the tree when the bark is cut or injured, solidifying into chunks or “tears” upon contact with air. Its resinous, dry, balsamic aroma is also a key ingredient in many perfumes.
